Sirtuin1 Expression and Correlation with Histopathological Features in Retinoblastoma

چکیده

Background: Sirtuin1 (Sirt1) is a member of highly conserved proteins and has been implicated as a tumor promoter as well as a tumor suppressor. One of the mechanisms involves deacetylation of retinoblastoma protein, thereby inhibiting the tumor suppressor function. No study has been reported on the expression of Sirt1 in retinoblastoma. Methods: We assessed the expression of Sirt1 in sections of archived tissue blocks of enucleated and exenterated specimens of retinoblastoma patients by immunohistochemistry. The histopathological features were reviewed and correlated with the expression of Sirt1. The effect of Sirt1 expression on survival was also assessed. Results: Retrospective data of 94 patients revealed that the median age at presentation was 36 months, with a male:female ratio of 1.9: 1. Fifty-one percent of the patients had International Retinoblastoma Staging System (IRSS) stage 1 disease. Of the 94 sections, 89 (95%) expressed Sirt1. Forty-eight percent of the specimens showed grade 3 staining (>75% of the cells), and the intensity was 3+ in 53%. No association between Sirt1 expression and any histopathological feature was noted. Further, Sirt1 expression did not affect the overall and progression-free Received: July 9, 2015 Accepted after revision: August 12, 2015 Published online: September 24, 2015 Dr. Sameer Bakhshi Department of Medical Oncology, Dr. B.R.A. Quantification of Mean Vessel Density in Retinoblastoma and Its Correlation with Local Tumor Invasion and Patients Survival

Background and Objectives: Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular pediatric malignancy. Angiogenic factor expression such as VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) in retinoblastoma can be confirmatory angiogenic potential of this tumor. This study was performed to determine the role of angiogenesis in local invasion of retinoblastoma and its correlation with patients’ sur...

Histopathological Evaluation and Analysis of Immunohistochemical Expression of Bcl-2 Oncoprotein in Colorectal Carcinoma

Abstract Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the third most prevalent malignancy with high mortality rate, necessitating markers that predict survival and guide the treatment. Previous studies have examined the immunohistochemical expression of Bcl-2, an apoptotic marker, in colorectal carcinoma, but results have been contradictory. Objectives: To evaluate the histopathological featu...

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Expression in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma by Immunohistochemical Technique and its Correlation with Clinicopathological Features

Background:Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity. Despite some improvements in treatment, the survival rate is still very low, mainly due to the possible development of secondary malignancy or metastasis. Clinical and pathological features as well as molecular biomarkers might predict the recurrence. In recent years, many studies ...

Immunohistochemical analysis of retinoblastoma cell phenotype using neuronal and glial cell markers.

Purpose: The cellular origin of retinoblastoma is uncertain as constituent tumor cells heterogeneously express markers of both immature and mature retinal cells. An immunohistochemical analysis of cellular origin may yield valuable insights into disease progression and treatment options. This study aimed to determine the cellular origin of retinoblastoma in a large case series and correlate the...
